About this course

Human geography is the study of the relationships between people, places, and the spaces they inhabit and create. Where physical geography examines natural systems, human geography focuses on the social, economic, cultural, and political forces that shape how landscapes are produced and experienced, how cities and regions develop, how migration and mobility occur, and how inequality and power are expressed spatially. It is a discipline that asks why places look and function the way they do, and what the consequences of those arrangements are for different groups of people.

At Aberystwyth University, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated year studying abroad, giving you the opportunity to encounter human geography in a different country and institutional context. Aberystwyth's Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is one of the most established in the UK, and the university's location on the coast of Cardigan Bay in west Wales offers a setting of particular geographical interest, surrounded by diverse landscapes that provide excellent fieldwork opportunities. You will study socio-economic, cultural, political, and environmental geography, developing skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods, fieldwork, data analysis, and the interpretation of spatial patterns and processes.

You will engage with contemporary geographical debates about globalisation, climate change, urban development, inequality, migration, and the politics of place, building a well-rounded analytical toolkit for understanding the world and the forces that shape it. Fieldwork is central to geographical training, taking you beyond the lecture theatre to observe and analyse real places and communities.

Graduates from human geography programmes pursue careers in urban and regional planning, environmental management, international development, local government, research, education, the charity sector, and a wide range of other fields. The analytical versatility that geography develops is valued by many employers. Postgraduate study in geography, urban planning, development studies, or a related discipline is a natural continuation.
