Hungarian and Romanian

Hungarian and Romanian is a language combination that connects two Central and Eastern European cultures with distinct and fascinating literary, historical, and linguistic traditions. Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language quite unlike its Slavic, Germanic, and Romance neighbours, the language of a nation at the heart of Central European history and of a global diaspora with remarkable cultural achievements in music, science, and literature. Romanian is a Romance language descended from Latin, the language of a country whose history spans the Roman province of Dacia, the Ottoman frontier, and the complex twentieth century of Communism and transition.

This four-year full-time programme at University College London is taught within one of the UK's leading modern languages departments. You will develop proficiency in both Hungarian and Romanian, studying grammar, spoken and written communication, and the literature and cultural history of each country. The programme takes both languages seriously as full objects of academic study, and UCL's resources in Eastern and Central European languages are strong.

London provides access to Hungarian and Romanian cultural communities and to the international professional networks where these languages have value, including in EU institutions, diplomatic services, and businesses operating in the region.

Graduates from this programme pursue careers in translation and interpretation, international organisations, diplomacy, journalism, business operating in Central and Eastern Europe, and academic research. Both languages are relatively rare in the UK, which gives graduates a genuine advantage in fields where they are needed. Postgraduate options include linguistics, translation studies, area studies, and international relations, and the research and language skills developed at UCL provide an excellent foundation for doctoral study in any field relating to these languages or regions.
