About this course

Illustration is a visual communication discipline that uses image-making to solve creative problems, tell stories, explain concepts, and engage audiences in ways that words alone cannot achieve. Unlike fine art, which tends towards self-expression and open interpretation, illustration is purposive: it is made in response to a brief, for a specific audience, in a particular context. The range of contexts is vast, from children's publishing and editorial illustration to scientific communication, fashion, advertising, graphic novels, animation, and digital platforms, and the best illustrators develop both a distinctive visual voice and the versatility to work effectively across different formats.

At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who need an additional period of creative and academic preparation, and offers a year abroad for those who want to encounter illustration education in another cultural and artistic environment. You will develop creative problem-solving skills that allow you to generate images as rigorous pieces of visual communication, understanding how visual choices produce meaning and how illustration functions differently in different contexts. The programme develops both your practical skills in drawing, composition, and visual storytelling and your critical understanding of the history and contemporary practice of the field.

Dundee has a strong creative industries profile, with recognised strengths in games, comics, and design, and the university's location in this context provides a stimulating professional environment for creative study.

Graduates of Illustration programmes work as freelance illustrators specialising in particular sectors, as well as in roles in graphic design, art direction, concept art, animation, surface pattern design, and arts education. Many develop portfolio careers that combine commercial commissions with personal and gallery-based work. Postgraduate study in illustration, visual communication, or related disciplines is available for those who want to extend their practice.

Genuinely worthwhile
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the ci
