At York St John University, this part-time programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities. You will explore illustration through a focus on drawing, image-making, and narrative, developing your technical skills in both traditional and digital media using industry-standard software and equipment. Alongside practical development, you will study illustration theory and the wider contexts in which illustration operates, understanding how the field has evolved and how contemporary practitioners situate their work culturally and commercially.

Graduates of Illustration work as editorial illustrators, children's book illustrators, character designers, concept artists, surface pattern designers, motion graphic artists, and visual storytellers across a wide range of industries including publishing, advertising, games, animation, and branded content. Many build freelance practices alongside employed work, developing long-term relationships with publishers, agencies, and editorial clients. Others move into art direction, graphic design, or teaching.
