About this course

Immunology and pharmacology together address two of the most important and interconnected dimensions of biomedical science: how the body defends itself against disease, and how drugs interact with biological systems to treat it. Immunology examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms of immune responses, the role of the immune system in health and disease, and the ways in which it can be harnessed to develop vaccines and immunotherapies. Pharmacology studies how chemical compounds act on living systems, how drugs are developed, tested, and used clinically, and how the body processes and responds to them.

The combination is particularly powerful for understanding modern medicine, where immunological and pharmacological approaches are increasingly intertwined.

At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year full-time degree includes both a year abroad and an industrial placement. The industrial placement provides direct experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or research settings, giving you the kind of real-world scientific exposure that is highly valued by employers in the life sciences sector and that can define the direction of your graduate career. The year abroad adds international academic experience in a biomedical research environment.

You will develop thorough knowledge of immunological mechanisms, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, drug discovery and development processes, the pathophysiology of immune-mediated diseases, and the clinical applications of pharmacological and immunological treatments. Research methods and laboratory skills are developed throughout, preparing you for both industry and academic research roles.

Graduates of immunology and pharmacology programmes pursue careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, academic and medical research, clinical laboratory science, regulatory affairs, science communication, and healthcare. The five-year programme's combination of academic depth and industry experience through the placement year makes graduates particularly competitive in the pharmaceutical sector. Further study options include doctoral research in immunology, pharmacology, drug discovery, and translational medicine, as well as postgraduate medical and clinical science training routes.
