About this course

Immunology is the branch of biomedical science concerned with how the body defends itself against infection, disease, and foreign substances. The immune system is extraordinarily complex, involving numerous cell types, molecular signals, and regulatory mechanisms that must balance effective defence against pathogens with the tolerance of the body's own tissues. Understanding how these components work, how they can fail in conditions such as autoimmune disease, allergy, and immunodeficiency, and how they can be harnessed through vaccines and immunotherapies, is one of the most important frontiers in biomedical research and clinical medicine.

At the University of Manchester, this four-year full-time BSc in Immunology with a Modern Language includes a foundation year and adds an additional dimension that is increasingly valuable in scientific careers: genuine competence in a second language. You will study the cellular and molecular basis of the immune system, immune responses to infection, the mechanisms of inflammation, and the science underlying vaccines, transplantation, and cancer immunotherapy, building a rigorous understanding of how the immune system coordinates protection while maintaining tolerance.
