About this course

Integrative counselling draws on multiple therapeutic traditions, combining elements from different theoretical frameworks, such as person-centred therapy, psychodynamic approaches, cognitive-behavioural perspectives, and humanistic and existential ideas, to provide a flexible, client-centred approach to therapeutic work. Rather than committing exclusively to a single model, integrative counsellors develop the ability to draw on a range of approaches in response to each client's individual needs and presenting issues. This requires both a thorough understanding of multiple frameworks and the self-awareness and reflective capacity to use them responsibly in practice.

This part-time foundation degree programme at Birmingham Newman University provides professional training that leads to a qualification as a BACP registered counsellor. You will develop both professional and academic competences throughout the course, engaging with clinical therapeutic work, academic study, and reflective practice in an integrated way that mirrors how professional counselling practice actually works. You will develop the theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, ethical understanding, and personal insight needed to become an insightful, responsible, and effective practitioner, with regular opportunities to engage in supported clinical work that develops your confidence and competence.

Graduates who complete the programme and achieve their BACP registration go on to work as counsellors in a wide range of settings, including NHS primary care and mental health services, voluntary sector counselling organisations, private practice, educational settings, employee assistance programmes, charities, and community services. Many counsellors work in combination with other therapeutic roles or combine counselling practice with teaching, supervision, or further study. Those who wish to progress to full membership of BACP or to practise at an advanced level may go on to postgraduate training or further clinical development.
