Interior Architecture

Interior Architecture occupies the space between architecture and interior design, addressing how the interior environments of buildings are conceived, planned, and detailed. It goes beyond decoration to engage with spatial structure, light, materials, and the ways people move through and inhabit designed spaces. The discipline applies architectural thinking to interiors, asking how space can be shaped to serve human needs, create atmosphere, and respond to the existing building's character and structure.

It is a field where creativity and technical rigour are equally important.

At Northumbria University, this extended degree runs across four years of full-time study and includes a sandwich year with work placement opportunities and a year abroad, making it one of the more richly structured programmes in this area. You will develop spatial design skills through studio projects, studying drawing, model-making, and digital design tools alongside the technical knowledge of construction, materials, and environmental systems that interior architecture demands. The year abroad and placement year give you direct experience of interior design practice in different cultural and professional contexts before graduation.

Interior architecture graduates work across a wide range of sectors. Commercial interior design, residential design, hospitality and retail design, heritage conservation, exhibition design, and set design for film and theatre are all established career paths. Interior architecture firms, architecture practices, construction companies, and specialist interior consultancies are the main employers, though many graduates build freelance or portfolio careers.
