About this course

Interior Architecture is a discipline concerned with the design and transformation of internal spaces within existing or new buildings, operating at the boundary between architecture and interior design. It asks how spaces can be adapted, reimagined and made to serve new purposes while respecting the structural and cultural heritage of the buildings that contain them. In an era of increasing concern about the environmental and social costs of demolition and new construction, interior architecture's emphasis on adaptive reuse, the intelligent repurposing of existing fabric rather than building from scratch, is both ethically important and practically significant.

At Leeds Beckett University this three-year full-time degree promotes a responsible and multidisciplinary approach to working within the built environment, with sustainability and the conservation of existing resources as central concerns. You will develop skills in spatial design, drawing and modelling alongside an understanding of structural principles, materials and building technology as they apply to existing structures. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience during your studies.

The curriculum encourages you to think critically about the ethical and environmental dimensions of design decisions alongside developing your creative and technical skills.

Graduates from Interior Architecture degrees go on to careers in interior design studios, architectural practices, heritage conservation bodies, retail and hospitality design consultancies, and property development and management organisations. Others find roles in exhibition design, set design, sustainability consultancy and project management roles in the construction and development sector. The design thinking, spatial intelligence and professional awareness the degree develops are also transferable into areas such as product design, urban planning and built environment research.

Postgraduate study in interior design, architecture, sustainable design or design research is an option for those wishing to develop further expertise.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” …
