About this course

Interior design is fundamentally about the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. Good interior design goes well beyond aesthetics: it shapes how people feel, how they move, how they work, and how they rest. It draws on an understanding of human behaviour, spatial planning, materials, light, colour, and structure to create environments that are functional, safe, and meaningful.

The discipline serves residential clients looking to transform their homes and commercial clients designing offices, retail spaces, hotels, healthcare facilities, and public buildings. A skilled interior designer brings together creative vision and technical rigour in equal measure.

At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year full-time programme will equip you to work across the full range of interior design contexts. You will learn to analyse a brief, understand a client's needs, and develop design solutions that balance beauty with practicality. The programme covers spatial planning, technical drawing, materials specification, lighting design, and the communication skills needed to present ideas convincingly to clients and collaborators.

You will develop a design process that moves from research and concept through to detailed design and presentation, building a portfolio that demonstrates your creative range and technical competence.

You will also gain an understanding of the regulatory and technical frameworks that govern interior design, including building standards, accessibility requirements, and sustainability considerations. These are not peripheral concerns: they are central to professional practice and shape design decisions at every stage. Working with residential, commercial, and public sector briefs, you will build the versatility to adapt your thinking to different scales, budgets, and purposes.

Graduates from interior design programmes work across a wide range of sectors. Many establish themselves in design studios working with residential or commercial clients, while others move into specialist areas such as retail design, hospitality, healthcare environments, or exhibition and set design. Some graduates pursue careers in property development, project management, or furniture and product design.

Further study, including postgraduate programmes in interior architecture or spatial design, is an option for those who want to deepen their specialism or move into research and teaching.
