Interior Design
Interior design is the creative and technical discipline of designing interior spaces to meet the needs of the people who use them, creating environments that are functional, aesthetically coherent, and responsive to their social and cultural context. It involves spatial planning, the selection and specification of materials and furniture, the control of lighting and acoustics, and the development of a design concept that gives a space its character and purpose. Interior design is distinct from interior decoration in that it engages with structural and spatial change, not just surface treatment, and it can involve transforming retail, leisure, workplace, hospitality, and residential environments.
At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year, full-time degree encourages you to imagine what is possible and to develop your own design practice through a supportive learning journey. You will explore how to transform space and question the future of retail, leisure, workspaces, and all interior environments beyond the domestic, developing both the creative vision and the technical skills that professional interior designers need. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving you direct experience of the industry and the professional contexts in which interior designers practise.
Graduates work in interior design studios, architectural practices, retail and commercial design consultancies, hospitality and leisure companies, property developers, and exhibition design. Roles in space planning, project management, and procurement are common alongside direct design practice. The skills are also valuable in set design, visual merchandising, and property styling.
Many graduates build studio-based careers as independent designers or within creative agencies, while others develop specialist expertise in particular sectors such as healthcare design, sustainable interiors, or luxury hospitality. Postgraduate study in interior design or architecture is an option for those who want to develop advanced practice.
