Interior Design

Interior design is the professional practice of shaping the internal environments in which people live, work, and spend their time. It is a discipline that combines spatial thinking, material knowledge, technical skill, and sensitivity to human needs and behaviour, asking designers to create spaces that are functional, safe, aesthetically considered, and reflective of their clients' identities and purposes. Good interior design is never purely decorative: it is about understanding how space affects the people within it, and using that understanding to make environments that genuinely work.

At Northumbria University, this three-year full-time programme is structured to develop both creative and professional capability. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, as well as work placements embedded in the curriculum, giving you extensive experience in professional contexts and international settings before you graduate. Newcastle's position within a region with a rich architectural and cultural heritage provides a stimulating backdrop for design study, and Northumbria's strong industry connections mean the teaching is grounded in current practice.

You will develop your spatial, technical, and presentation skills across a range of project types, from domestic interiors and hospitality spaces to retail, workspace, and public environments. You will also engage with the history and theory of interior design, developing the critical vocabulary needed to position your work within the broader design conversation. The typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the programme's expectations.

Interior design graduates work across a wide range of professional settings. Many go on to work in interior design practices, architecture firms, and retail or hospitality companies, taking projects from concept through to completion. Others move into set design, exhibition design, product styling, or design management.

The placement year and year abroad mean graduates often already have professional networks and international experience before entering the market. Postgraduate study in interior architecture, spatial design, or design management is available for those who want to specialise or pursue research.
