Interior Design
Interior design is the creative and technical discipline concerned with the design of interior spaces for human use. Interior designers work at a holistic scale, addressing not only the visual and aesthetic qualities of a space but the structural interventions, material choices, lighting, acoustics, wayfinding and furniture specification that together determine the human experience of being in a building. The field spans a wide range of contexts, from retail environments and commercial offices to private homes, hotels, galleries and hospitality venues, and practitioners work at a level of technical complexity comparable to that required of architects.
At the University of the West of England, Bristol this programme runs full time over four years and includes a sandwich year and work-placement experience, giving you a significant period of professional practice in an interior design or related built-environment context during your studies. You will develop competence in spatial design thinking, technical drawing, computer-aided design, materials and finishes specification, lighting design, sustainable design principles and the professional practices of the interior design industry. Graduates from interior design programmes work as interior designers, space planners, retail designers, hospitality designers, set designers, exhibition designers and design consultants across commercial, residential and public-sector contexts.
