International Business

International business is the study of how commercial activity crosses national boundaries, and of the forces, institutions, and strategies that shape that movement. It draws together economics, management theory, marketing, finance, and political economy to explain why organisations operate globally, how they navigate different regulatory and cultural environments, and what determines their success in international markets. As trade, investment, and digital commerce continue to integrate the global economy, the ability to think and act across borders has become a defining professional skill.

Studying at Birkbeck College over three years full-time, you will examine the key functions of business, including operations, marketing, finance, and human resource management, within an explicitly international frame. You will analyse how multinational enterprises structure themselves, how they enter new markets, and how they manage the tensions between global standardisation and local adaptation. The curriculum develops a global mindset, encouraging you to think beyond domestic assumptions and to understand how institutions, cultures, and political systems shape the choices available to firms and their employees.
