About this course

International business is the study of how commercial activity operates across national borders, encompassing trade, foreign investment, multinational firms, global supply chains, and the cultural, political, and regulatory differences that shape how business is done in different parts of the world. It is a field that demands both business acumen and genuine cross-cultural intelligence: the ability to navigate different business practices, legal systems, communication styles, and market conditions is central to success in any career that has an international dimension.

At the University of Portsmouth, this three-year full-time programme gives you the business knowledge and international experience needed to build a genuinely global career. You will study core business subjects, including strategy, marketing, finance, and operations, through a lens that consistently engages with the international context in which business occurs. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, which together make international experience a defining feature of your qualification rather than an optional extra.

You will have the opportunity to live and study abroad, developing your cross-cultural adaptability and building the personal and professional confidence that comes from operating successfully in unfamiliar environments.

You will develop skills in business analysis, strategic thinking, cross-cultural communication, and professional presentation, as well as the practical adaptability that international careers demand.

Graduates go on to careers in international marketing and sales, global supply chain management, trade finance, business development, international consulting, and management roles within multinational organisations. Many also move into export management, international relations, and NGO or government roles with an international dimension. Postgraduate study in international business, management, or global marketing is a well-supported route for those seeking to specialise or accelerate their career internationally.

A great decision
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the careers office is relentless about getting you internships. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport link…

Would do it again
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you share a house …
