International Relations and Mediaeval History

International relations and medieval history is a combination of apparent contrast that reveals, on closer examination, a profound intellectual logic. International relations is concerned with the structures and dynamics of the modern state system, but those structures have deep historical roots: the emergence of sovereignty, diplomacy, trade networks, religious conflict, and territorial competition all have medieval origins that continue to shape the world we inhabit. Medieval history, far from being remote, provides a laboratory for understanding how power, identity, community, and conflict operated in pre-modern conditions that have more in common with the present than is often acknowledged.

At the University of St Andrews this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops both disciplines with the seriousness they deserve. International relations at St Andrews explores the origins of war and peace, the making of foreign policy, trade regimes, international terrorism, human rights, international law, and the relationship between political and economic development. Medieval history brings deep archival and scholarly engagement with the period, including the languages, documents, and material cultures of medieval Europe and beyond.

The degree includes a year abroad, broadening your intellectual perspective and your experience of different scholarly traditions. St Andrews has a particularly strong reputation in both international studies and medieval history.

You will develop rigorous research skills, the ability to work with primary historical sources, and the analytical frameworks to understand contemporary international affairs through historical depth.

Graduates go on to careers in diplomacy, the civil service, international organisations, think tanks, journalism, heritage, museum work, education, and law. Postgraduate study in international relations, medieval studies, history, or international law is a natural and common continuation.
