Modern languages add the capacity to engage directly with the cultures, media, and diplomacy of specific world regions, avoiding the dependence on translations and intermediaries that limits the international relations analyst who lacks language skills. At Essex, you will begin with an overview of international relations in your first year, covering topics from global political economy to conflict and security, before moving into a range of specialist topics in subsequent years. The international relations curriculum is complemented by modern language study, giving you proficiency in a language that connects directly to the regions and actors you are studying. The programme runs over four years full-time, with a typical entry tariff of 104 points.

Graduates of international relations and modern languages programmes pursue careers in diplomacy, the foreign and civil service, international organisations, think tanks, NGOs, journalism, international business, and policy research. The language skills give particular access to roles involving engagement with specific linguistic regions, while the IR analytical framework equips you to make sense of the international system in which those regions operate.
