International Relations and Sociology

International relations and sociology together provide a layered framework for understanding the forces that shape human societies both within and across national borders. International relations examines the behaviour of states, international organisations, and transnational actors, addressing questions of conflict, cooperation, trade, security, and global governance. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme adopts a transdisciplinary approach, meaning you are consistently encouraged to think across both disciplines rather than treating them as separate. The programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need additional preparation before degree-level study, as well as a sandwich year and work placement, which provide valuable professional experience. You will engage with topics such as global inequality, migration, geopolitics, social policy, conflict and peacebuilding, and the dynamics of power at both global and local levels.

The programme develops research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex social and political ideas to different audiences.
