International Relations

International relations is the study of how states, international organisations, and other actors interact across national borders, examining the forces that drive conflict, cooperation, trade, diplomacy, and global governance. It draws on political theory, history, economics, and sociology to make sense of a world shaped by competing national interests, international institutions, and transnational pressures such as climate change, migration, and global finance. Understanding international relations has never been more important, as the global order faces challenges to the assumptions and institutions built since 1945.

At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of international relations theory, foreign policy, global governance, security, and the major issues shaping world affairs. You will study the structures and processes of the international system alongside the specific challenges of contemporary global politics, developing your analytical and communication skills and your ability to evaluate complex geopolitical situations with rigour. The programme is designed with an eye to the digital and analytical capabilities that employers value in a changing world.

International relations graduates work in the diplomatic service, international organisations, government, journalism, non-governmental organisations, think tanks, international business, finance, and a wide range of roles in which an understanding of global affairs and geopolitical dynamics is valued. The analytical, research, and communication skills the degree develops transfer readily across many professional fields. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in international relations, security studies, international law, or related disciplines.
