International Relations

International relations is the academic study of how the world's political actors, from nation-states and international institutions to multinational corporations and social movements, interact across borders. It examines the causes and consequences of war and peace, the dynamics of trade and development, the role of norms and international law, and the deep political, economic, and cultural forces that shape the global environment in which all of us live.

At the University of Lincoln, professionals working in international relations are understood as people with an in-depth understanding of the impact of political, economic, and cultural forces, who seek to balance these dynamics in complex and globalised conditions. You will study international relations theory, from realism and liberalism to constructivism and critical approaches, alongside the empirical study of specific regions, conflicts, organisations, and issues such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and global inequality. The programme develops your ability to analyse complex situations, construct arguments from evidence, and communicate your conclusions clearly.

The course includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you a richly varied range of professional and international experience alongside the academic programme. Graduates from international relations programmes go on to careers in the diplomatic service, civil service, international organisations, NGOs, journalism, think tanks, political analysis, development agencies, and international business.
