International Social and Political Studies

International social and political studies is a discipline that examines the world through multiple social science lenses simultaneously, treating the political, economic, sociological, and cultural dimensions of international life as inseparable. Where political science or economics alone might focus on one dimension of how countries relate to each other, international social and political studies asks broader questions: how do global structures shape local lives, how do societies differ in the way they organise authority and distribute resources, and what drives conflict and cooperation between states and peoples?

At University College London this four-year full-time degree builds in a serious language and area studies component alongside the social science core. You will study a European or non-European language to a high level and spend time in a country where that language is spoken, which is integral to the programme's approach: genuine international understanding requires engagement from the inside, not just observation from a distance. The social science curriculum covers political theory, international relations, comparative politics, sociology, and economics, and you will develop research and analytical skills across both qualitative and quantitative methods.
