Italian and Theatre Studies

Combining Italian with Theatre Studies brings together two disciplines that share a deep investment in performance, language and culture. Italian is one of Europe's great literary languages, carrying centuries of poetry, prose, philosophy and opera, while Theatre Studies examines performance as an art form, a social practice and a site of cultural meaning. Studied together at the University of Warwick, they offer a genuinely enriching combination, allowing you to develop fluency in a European language and culture while engaging rigorously with questions of staging, spectatorship and theatrical tradition.

You will study across four years on a full-time programme that includes a sandwich placement year, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience in a relevant context, whether in theatre, arts administration, translation, education or another field. As noted, Italian may be studied from beginner level, so no prior knowledge of the language is required. You will develop your language skills through translation, essay writing and spoken practice, while also engaging with Italian literature, film and cultural history.

In Theatre Studies you will work across theory and practice, examining dramatic texts and performance histories alongside making and analysing live work. Warwick's arts facilities and its proximity to the West Midlands arts scene provide a rich context for the theatrical side of your studies.

Graduates of this combination develop a distinctive profile: linguistic competence in Italian, cultural knowledge of Italy and its creative traditions, and practical and theoretical grounding in theatre and performance. Careers in theatre directing, arts administration, cultural policy, translation, education, journalism and international business are all pathways open to you. Many graduates also move into postgraduate study in performance, Italian studies, European culture or education.
