About this course

Italian studies at the highest level means engaging with one of Europe's most significant literary, artistic, and cultural traditions. From Dante, Boccaccio, and the Renaissance humanists to the risorgimento, futurism, neorealism, and contemporary writing, Italian culture has shaped and been shaped by the major currents of European thought across eight centuries. Studying it in depth means developing genuine linguistic competence alongside sophisticated knowledge of literature, art history, cinema, and the historical and political forces that have made Italy what it is today.

The UCL-Venice double degree is a distinctive programme that allows you to study simultaneously at University College London, one of the world's great research universities, and Ca' Foscari University of Venice, one of Italy's most internationally oriented institutions. Over four years of full-time study, you will engage with the programme across both institutions, gaining an immersive experience of Italian language and culture in one of the world's most remarkable cities while benefiting from UCL's academic resources and networks in London. You will study Italian language at an advanced level, Italian literature and cultural history, and a range of topics in Italian studies that draw on the expertise of both universities.

The double degree results in qualifications awarded by both institutions, a genuinely distinctive academic achievement.

Graduates from Italian studies programmes go on to work in translation, journalism, academia, diplomacy, cultural organisations, teaching, publishing, international business, and the heritage sector. The UCL-Venice double degree adds particular prestige and a deep bicultural formation that is valued in roles requiring genuine engagement with Italy and Italian-speaking contexts. Many graduates continue to doctoral research in Italian literature, history, or cultural studies, or pursue professional qualifications that take their linguistic expertise into practice.
