Italian is one of the great European languages, with a literary and cultural tradition stretching back to Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio and running through to the present day. Studying it at degree level means developing genuine linguistic fluency while also engaging with Italian history, literature, cinema, politics, and society in their own right. Italy has shaped Western culture in art, architecture, music, philosophy, and science over centuries, and being able to engage with that tradition through the language itself is an entirely different experience from approaching it in translation.

This four-year full-time programme at the University of Liverpool develops your Italian from whatever starting point you bring to a high level of proficiency across speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You will study a range of cultural texts, historical periods, and contemporary issues that allow you to understand Italy not as a museum piece but as a complex modern society with a rich and contested past.
