Japan is one of the world's most distinctive civilisations, a nation that underwent rapid industrialisation and modernisation in the nineteenth century while maintaining cultural traditions of extraordinary depth and continuity. Its literature, philosophy, visual arts, cinema, and popular culture have had global influence, and its history, from feudal society to colonial power to postwar democratic recovery, raises profound questions about modernity, identity, and cultural change. Studying Japan academically means engaging with all of this through both critical scholarship and direct linguistic access.

At Birkbeck College, this BA Japanese Studies offers stimulating and critical academic expertise in Japanese culture, history, and society, grounded in cutting-edge research on Japan. At the same time, you will develop a near-fluent command of the Japanese language, enabling you to engage with Japanese texts, media, and people directly. The programme is studied part-time, making it accessible alongside work or other commitments, and the London setting provides access to a significant Japanese community and cultural resources.

You will study Japanese history, society, literature, and contemporary culture alongside intensive language training.

Graduates of Japanese studies programmes pursue careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy, journalism, education, cultural institutions, and organisations with interests in Japan and East Asia. Japanese-language proficiency combined with academic knowledge of Japanese culture and society is particularly valued by employers with commercial, governmental, or cultural links to Japan.
