Journalism and Media

Journalism and media together examine two deeply intertwined dimensions of contemporary public life: the practice of reporting, investigating, and communicating news, and the broader study of the media landscape in which that practice operates. Journalism gives you practical skills in research, writing, interviewing, and storytelling across multiple platforms. Media and communication studies provides the analytical and theoretical tools to understand how news organisations function, how audiences consume information, how ownership structures shape editorial output, and how digital disruption is transforming everything.

At Leicester, this degree takes the best of the university's journalism and media and communication programmes, giving you a grounding in journalism alongside a developed understanding of the context in which contemporary media operates. You will build practical competencies, including writing for print and digital, audio and video production, and data journalism, alongside critical thinking about media industries, ethics, and the political economy of news. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, both of which substantially develop your professional networks and global understanding, and work placements are embedded throughout.

The degree runs over three years full-time, with a typical entry tariff of 120 points.

Graduates of journalism and media programmes pursue careers across the full media landscape, in print and digital journalism, broadcast and podcast production, public relations, content marketing, communications, and public affairs. The combination of practical skill and critical understanding is valued by employers across the public and private sectors, not only in the media industry itself. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in journalism, media studies, or communications, or move into related fields such as documentary production, political communications, and research.
