Journalism is one of the oldest and most essential functions of a free society. It exists to find out what is happening, to investigate what those in power would prefer to conceal, to make sense of complex events and to tell stories that matter to people's lives. The craft of journalism, the ability to report accurately, write clearly and edit decisively, is one of the most demanding and transferable communication skills you can develop, and it remains valuable across a wide range of careers even as the industry itself continues to evolve.

At the University of Chester, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year before progressing into the main degree. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your journalism skills and personal perspective in a different national and media context. You will study news writing, broadcast journalism, digital media, investigative reporting, media law and ethics, feature writing, journalism history and the changing economics of the news industry.

The programme develops both the practical craft of journalism and the critical framework to understand what journalism is for and how it can be done responsibly and effectively.

Journalism graduates move into a wide range of careers. Many work in news and media, in print, broadcast, online and audio formats, for national and regional outlets, specialist publications and independent digital organisations. Others move into public relations, communications, content marketing, policy, public affairs and social media roles, where the same core skills of finding, verifying and communicating information are equally valued.

The year abroad adds an international dimension that is increasingly useful in a media landscape with few geographical boundaries. Further study in journalism, media or communications is also a common route.
