Journalism is the profession concerned with gathering, verifying and communicating information in the public interest. It is one of the oldest and most important professional crafts in democratic societies, playing a central role in holding power to account, informing citizens and creating the shared understanding of events and issues that public life depends on. The digital revolution has transformed journalism radically, creating new platforms and audiences while disrupting traditional business models and raising new questions about speed, accuracy, ethics and the boundaries between professional and citizen journalism.

At Teesside University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a sandwich placement year alongside work placement opportunities. You will explore media fundamentals from the outset, developing practical skills in image-making, video, sound and audio-visual production alongside the theoretical understanding of media environments, professional ethics, critical analysis and audience dynamics that a well-rounded journalism education requires. The foundation year builds the academic skills and media literacy needed before you progress to degree-level content, and the placement year gives you sustained professional experience in journalism and media settings.

Journalism graduates go on to careers in print, digital, broadcast, radio and multimedia journalism, as well as in content creation, public relations, communications and media production. The research, writing and critical thinking skills journalism develops are highly transferable and valued across many sectors beyond media, including law, public policy and communications. Many graduates build specialist journalism careers in areas such as sport, business, health, science or politics, while others move into editorial, production and management roles as their careers develop.
