Journalism with Human Rights

Journalism with human rights brings together two fields that are, at their best, pursuing the same goal: making power visible and giving voice to those who lack it. Journalism develops the practical and analytical skills needed to gather, verify, and communicate information to public audiences; human rights study provides a framework of law, ethics, and political theory for understanding how rights are protected and violated in different parts of the world. On this three-year full-time BA at the University of Essex, you develop both sets of skills simultaneously, graduating as a journalist with a principled understanding of the global human rights landscape.

You will build core journalistic competencies, learning to analyse and interpret information, develop your own distinctive voice, and communicate effectively to different audiences. Alongside that, you will engage with the fundamental principles that underpin human rights law and advocacy, exploring how international and domestic legal frameworks attempt to protect individuals and communities, where they succeed, and where they fail. The programme asks you to consider how journalism and human rights work intersect: how investigative reporting exposes abuses, how press freedom is itself a human rights concern, and how journalists navigate working in contexts of conflict and repression.

A typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects an academically serious programme aimed at students who are motivated by public interest work. Graduates from journalism with human rights are well placed to pursue careers in investigative and international journalism, human rights advocacy and non-governmental organisations, policy research, legal practice, and communications roles within intergovernmental bodies. Many continue to postgraduate study in human rights law, international journalism, or conflict reporting, building on the combination of professional and analytical skills they develop as undergraduates.
