Landscape Architecture
Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor spaces at every scale, from intimate gardens and urban plazas to regional green infrastructure and post-industrial land reclamation. It is a discipline that draws on ecology, horticulture, history, urban design, and planning, asking not just what a space could look like but how it should function for people, wildlife, and the environment over time. Landscape architects shape the public realm in ways that affect millions of people every day, often without those people being aware of it, and the discipline has become increasingly central to debates about urban resilience, biodiversity, and climate adaptation.
At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time BA prioritises hands-on learning from the start. You will explore ideas and themes through a variety of design briefs, building a portfolio of work that demonstrates your ability to move from concept to deliverable project. The programme integrates skills from adjacent disciplines, ranging from ecology and horticulture to policy, governance, history, and urban design, so that you graduate with a genuinely interdisciplinary perspective rather than a narrowly technical one.
The course includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to spend a full year in professional practice and gain the kind of real-world experience that is invaluable when you begin your career. Work placements are also built into the programme. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.
Graduates work in landscape architecture practices, local authorities, environmental consultancies, housing developers, parks and recreation departments, and infrastructure organisations. The built environment is under increasing pressure to become greener and more ecologically sensitive, which means demand for qualified landscape architects is strong. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study, working towards chartered status with the Landscape Institute or pursuing research in urban design, environmental planning, or sustainability.
