About this course

Latin and Mathematics is a striking combination that brings together two disciplines each concerned with rigour, precision, and the pursuit of truth, but by entirely different means. Latin is the key to one of the richest bodies of literature and thought in the Western tradition, a language whose study builds grammatical precision, close reading skills, and access to the philosophical, political, and literary worlds of ancient Rome. Mathematics develops the capacity for abstract reasoning, the construction of formal proofs, and the quantitative thinking that underpins modern science and technology.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme develops your Latin language skills and your ability to engage with literary and cultural analysis alongside rigorous mathematical training. The Latin strand takes you from the foundations of the language, or builds on prior knowledge if you already have it, through to the reading and analysis of major Latin texts in their historical and cultural contexts. The mathematics strand develops your understanding of analysis, algebra, statistics, and applied mathematics, building the theoretical depth and problem-solving capability that a serious mathematics education requires.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience a different academic tradition in either or both subjects.

The combination of Latin and mathematics is genuinely distinctive and prepares graduates for a range of careers that value both analytical precision and cultural depth.
