Latin/Mathematics

Latin and mathematics might appear to share little beyond their requirement for precision and patience, but the combination has a long intellectual history, and studying the two together develops a range of intellectual capacities that neither provides alone. Latin is the language of Roman civilisation and of the European intellectual tradition, giving you direct access to one of the greatest literary and philosophical cultures in history. Through Latin you will read poets including Virgil and Ovid, Roman dramatists, orators, historians, biographers and philosophers, as well as developing an understanding of Roman political and social history, religion and art.

Mathematics develops rigorous deductive reasoning, abstract thinking and problem-solving of a fundamentally different but equally demanding kind.

This part-time degree at the University of Glasgow includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study either Latin or mathematics in a different academic and cultural context. The part-time mode allows you to combine this specialist combination with other commitments over an extended period. You will develop genuine scholarly competence in Latin, reading complex texts in the original language and understanding them in their historical and cultural context, while building the mathematical knowledge and analytical skills that the discipline demands at university level.

Graduates from this combination have demonstrated an unusual intellectual range and rigour that is valued in teaching, academia, publishing, law, the civil service, research and many other fields where the ability to handle demanding material with precision and care is an asset. Classical studies careers in museums, heritage and academic research are natural destinations for those who wish to develop their Latin.
