About this course

Law is a rigorous intellectual discipline as well as a professional training, and studying it with a specialist pathway in environment and sustainability allows you to engage from the outset with some of the most pressing legal questions of our time. Environmental law governs how states, organisations, and individuals interact with the natural world: it regulates pollution, resource extraction, land use, biodiversity protection, and the legal obligations that arise from international climate agreements. Sustainability law is a growing field that asks how legal frameworks can be redesigned or reinterpreted to support a transition to more sustainable economies and ways of life.

At the University of Surrey, this three-year, full-time LLB programme gives you a solid grounding in the core subjects that a qualifying law degree requires, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, and equity and trusts, while the Law, Environment and Sustainability pathway allows you to develop a distinctive specialism in environmental and sustainability dimensions of law. Surrey's integration of AI literacy and digital skills across its programmes reflects the changing demands of legal practice, and you will develop both the intellectual rigour of legal reasoning and an awareness of how the profession is evolving.

Graduates are well-prepared for professional legal training routes and for careers in environmental law, planning law, corporate sustainability, regulatory compliance, policy, and the public sector. Law firms with environmental practices, government agencies, environmental NGOs, international organisations, and large corporations managing their sustainability and legal obligations are all potential employers. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in environmental law, public international law, or sustainability, building on the specialism developed during the undergraduate degree.
