Law

Law is the study of the rules, principles and institutions through which societies order behaviour, resolve disputes and distribute rights and obligations. It is both an academic discipline with a rich intellectual tradition and a rigorous vocational training for those who wish to practise as solicitors, barristers or legal professionals in other forms. Even for those who do not pursue a legal career, a law degree develops a distinctive set of analytical and communication skills that are valued very widely.

At the University of East Anglia you will follow this three-year full-time LLB, covering the core areas of English law that foundation degrees must address, including contract, tort, criminal law, public law, land law, equity and trusts, and the European and human rights law dimensions of the UK legal order. Beyond the core, UEA's law department has particular strengths in areas including environmental law and policy, European law and socio-legal studies, and the curriculum reflects this intellectual character. You will develop the ability to read and interpret legal texts, to construct and evaluate legal arguments, to apply legal rules to complex factual situations and to communicate legal reasoning clearly in writing and in oral advocacy.

UEA's law school is also known for its engagement with the relationship between law and society, which gives the degree an additional critical and contextual dimension.

Law trains a very particular kind of analytical precision, the ability to identify the legally relevant features of a situation, to reason carefully about rules and their application, and to advocate a position persuasively. These capabilities serve both legal practice and a wide range of other professions.

Graduates who wish to practise law in England and Wales proceed to the Legal Practice Course (solicitors) or Bar Practice Course (barristers) or through the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination route. Others use the degree as a platform for careers in the civil service, business, journalism, finance, HR, compliance and a very wide range of other fields where analytical and communication skills are central.
