Law is the discipline that examines the rules, principles, and institutions through which societies organise themselves, resolve disputes, and hold power to account. Studying law at degree level goes well beyond learning what the rules say: it involves developing the capacity to reason analytically from first principles, to construct and dismantle arguments, to interpret statutory and judicial language with precision, and to understand how legal systems function within social and political contexts.

At the University of Northampton, this programme is offered part-time and includes a sandwich year and a work placement component, making it particularly well suited to students who are managing other commitments alongside their studies or who want to combine theoretical legal education with practical professional exposure from early on. You will study the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, public law, and equity, developing a thorough understanding of the common law tradition and the methods of legal reasoning on which it depends. The placement and sandwich elements give you experience in legal or related professional settings, which helps contextualise academic learning and makes graduates more confident in the transition to professional practice.

Law graduates pursue careers in solicitors' firms, barristers' chambers, the Crown Prosecution Service, in-house legal teams in commercial organisations, the civil service, journalism, financial services, and a wide range of other professional contexts where legal literacy is valued. Many graduates go on to qualify as solicitors through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or as barristers through the Bar Professional Training Course. Others use their legal education as a foundation for careers in policy, compliance, human resources, or management.
