Law is the system of rules, institutions, and principles through which societies manage conflict, protect rights, and allocate responsibilities. The undergraduate law degree asks you to engage with this system at both a technical and a critical level: understanding what the law is, how it is made and interpreted, and asking whether it serves the purposes it claims to serve. Legal study develops some of the most transferable intellectual skills available in any discipline, including precise analysis of complex texts, the construction of evidence-based arguments, and clear and authoritative written communication.

At Strathclyde, the LLB is offered in part-time mode, which the university makes accessible to mature students who hold a relevant prior degree or otherwise satisfy the university's general entrance requirements. This makes the programme a genuine pathway into law for those returning to education or combining study with professional or family commitments. You will study Scots law, which has its own distinctive common law and civilian heritage, giving you grounding in a legal system that differs in important ways from the English legal system while maintaining close connections to it.

The programme covers the foundational areas of private and public law, alongside research and analytical methods that will serve you throughout your career.

Graduation from a Scottish LLB provides the foundation for qualification as a solicitor in Scotland through the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, or as an advocate before the Scottish Bar. Many graduates also pursue qualification as English solicitors or barristers, and the analytical and communication skills developed by legal study are valued across the civil service, commercial organisations, journalism, policy, and management. Postgraduate routes in law or related disciplines are also well suited to LLB graduates who want to specialise.
