Law is the system of rules, institutions, and principles through which society regulates behaviour, protects rights, and resolves disputes. Studying it at degree level develops a precise, analytical way of thinking: the ability to read complex documents carefully, identify the legal principles that apply to a given situation, and construct clear, well-supported arguments. These skills are valuable far beyond the courtroom or solicitor's office, and law graduates are found in every sector of the economy.

At the University of Sunderland, the LLB in Law is a three-year full-time programme that develops both legal knowledge and the professional competencies that employers in the legal sector and beyond are looking for. You will study the foundation subjects of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, equity and trusts, and European law, and you will develop skills in legal research, analysis, and written argument. The programme places emphasis on commercial awareness, personal integrity, and an ethical approach to practice, reflecting the values that the profession demands.

The degree includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to gain practical experience in a legal or related professional environment before you graduate.

Sunderland's programme combines intellectual rigour with a strong focus on graduate outcomes, and the optional placement year is one of the most effective ways of making the transition from student to professional as effective as possible.

Graduates go on to train as solicitors through the Solicitor Qualifying Examination, as barristers through the Bar Course, or as legal executives via the CILEX route. Others enter careers in business, public administration, compliance, HR, or the civil service, where legal training is highly valued.
