Law with a Year Abroad

Law develops one of the most transferable skill sets available in higher education. The ability to read precisely, construct arguments under constraints, identify the legally relevant elements of a complex situation, and communicate your reasoning clearly are capacities that serve you well whether you practise as a solicitor or barrister or pursue a career in any other demanding profession. Law is also genuinely important in itself: understanding how rules are made, interpreted, applied, and contested is part of understanding how society functions.

This four-year full-time programme at the University of Liverpool includes a year abroad, which provides the opportunity to study law at an international partner institution. That experience of encountering a different legal system, whether a civil law jurisdiction in continental Europe or a common law system elsewhere in the world, is both intellectually enriching and practically valuable. Seeing English law from the outside, understanding what it shares with and how it differs from other legal traditions, sharpens your understanding of your home system in ways that purely domestic study cannot.

At Liverpool you will study the core subjects required for legal study in England and Wales, including contract, tort, criminal law, public law, and equity and trusts, alongside elective options that allow you to explore areas of particular interest. Liverpool's law school has strong connections with the legal profession in the North West and beyond, and the university's research strengths in areas such as commercial law, human rights, and comparative law inform the teaching you receive.

Graduates from law programmes continue to professional legal training through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or the Bar Professional Training Course, or move into careers in the civil service, finance, compliance, insurance, journalism, or any of the many sectors where legal knowledge is applied in non-advocacy roles.
