Law with Philosophy

Law with philosophy is a combination that engages with the deepest questions about legal systems rather than treating law purely as a technical body of rules. Philosophy of law, or jurisprudence, asks foundational questions that practising lawyers encounter every day but rarely have time to examine systematically: what is the source of legal authority, what makes a law just or unjust, what is the relationship between law and morality, and how should judges decide hard cases? Studying these questions philosophically alongside the technical study of law gives you a richer and more critical understanding of legal reasoning than a pure law degree typically provides.

At Royal Holloway, University of London, this three-year full-time degree, taught by departments with excellent reputations for both research and teaching, develops your legal knowledge across the core areas of English law alongside your capacity for philosophical analysis and ethical reasoning. You will study contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, and other core legal subjects while also engaging with political philosophy, ethics, epistemology and the philosophy of law. A sandwich year placement, a year abroad, and a work placement are all available, giving you significant professional and international experience that connects your academic education to the realities of legal and philosophical practice.

You will develop rigorous analytical skills, the ability to construct complex arguments, and the philosophical vocabulary to examine legal concepts and principles at a depth that most law graduates do not reach.

Graduates typically pursue legal qualification through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or Bar Training Course, or move into roles in policy, academia, human rights organisations, journalism, business, and any context where the ability to reason carefully about rules, rights and justice is valued. Postgraduate study in law, philosophy, or human rights is a well-supported pathway.
