Law With Politics

Law with politics is a degree that places the formal structures of legal reasoning alongside the political forces that create, contest, and reform the law. Law provides a qualifying legal education: you will study the core legal subjects that underpin English law, including contract, tort, constitutional and administrative law, criminal law, and equity, developing the technical legal knowledge and analytical skills that the profession demands. Politics brings a complementary perspective, asking how power is organised, how political systems function, and how political ideas and movements shape the laws under which societies live.

At Edge Hill University you will study part-time, with a sandwich year for professional experience, a year abroad for international study, and work placement embedded throughout. The LLB (Hons) is a qualifying law degree, meaning that, subject to the usual professional requirements, it provides the academic foundation needed to progress towards a career as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales. The politics strand develops your understanding of political theory, governance, electoral systems, political communication, and comparative politics, giving you a richer account of why legal systems look the way they do and how they change.

The part-time mode and the practical elements of the programme are designed to support students who are managing other commitments alongside their studies, developing the self-direction and time management skills that employers consistently value.

Graduates with a law with politics degree can progress to the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or the Bar Training Course for those wishing to qualify in the legal profession. Journalism, especially in political and legal coverage, is a further direction.
