Law with Politics

Law and politics are intimately connected disciplines. Law provides the formal rules and institutions through which political decisions are implemented and contested, while politics examines the processes of power, representation, and governance through which those rules are made and remade. Studying them together allows you to understand not just what the law says but why it takes the form it does, and to think critically about the relationship between legal authority and political legitimacy.

At Queen's University Belfast, the Law with Politics programme leads to a qualifying law degree while integrating a serious engagement with political science. You will study the core legal subjects required for qualification alongside modules examining political theory, comparative politics, and the specific political context of Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the wider international order. Queen's is located in a city with a uniquely rich and contested political history, and the programme benefits from a close relationship with the regional political infrastructure that gives students a distinctive vantage point on how law and politics interact in practice.

You will study conflict, cooperation, power, and decision-making not in the abstract but in a living political environment that makes the questions you are analysing genuinely urgent.

The degree runs over three years full-time, with a high typical entry tariff reflecting the academic rigour of the programme.

Graduates are well positioned for the legal profession, proceeding to the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or Bar Practice Course, as well as for careers in politics, government, the civil service, public policy, advocacy, and international organisations. The combination of legal qualification and political understanding is particularly valued in public law, human rights practice, and roles at the intersection of law and governance. Postgraduate study in law, political science, or public administration is also a strong option.
