About this course

Law with professional practice is a degree that takes seriously the bridge between academic legal education and the professional qualification that most law graduates aspire to. Legal education in England and Wales has changed significantly in recent years, with the introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination replacing the former route through the Legal Practice Course for those wishing to qualify as solicitors, and the CILEX Professional Qualification providing an alternative pathway into the legal profession. A degree designed explicitly to prepare students for these routes has a practical advantage for those with clear professional intentions.

At Coventry University, this four-year full-time programme is designed to develop the legal skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the SQE and CPQ professional qualifications. You will study the core legal subjects at the level expected of a qualifying law graduate, including contract, tort, criminal law, land law, equity, public law, and EU law, while also engaging with the professional skills of legal practice, including client care, legal research, drafting, and advocacy. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry with work placement and a year abroad, which is an unusual combination for a law degree and gives you significant professional and international experience before you graduate.

A typical entry tariff of 88 points reflects the programme's accessible entry standard and Coventry's commitment to widening access to legal education. The year abroad may involve studying at a partner law school in another country, which develops comparative legal understanding alongside the professional and cultural breadth that employers in international firms value.

Graduates proceed to SQE or CPQ qualification to become solicitors or CILEX lawyers, or pursue other careers in legal services, compliance, the public sector, and any field where legal knowledge and professional analytical skills are valuable. Many also continue to postgraduate study in specialist areas of law.
