About this course

Liberal Arts is a multidisciplinary degree that takes as its premise the idea that the deepest intellectual formation comes not from early specialisation but from sustained engagement with the range of disciplines that together constitute the human sciences: philosophy, history, literature, religious studies, politics, ethics, and the arts. It is an approach to education with deep roots in the Western university tradition, and its graduates are characterised by breadth of reference, intellectual flexibility, and the capacity to engage seriously with complex questions from multiple perspectives simultaneously.

At St Mary's University College, this three-year full-time programme develops your analytical, critical, and communication skills across the liberal arts disciplines, giving you a grounding in how different fields of enquiry approach the fundamental questions about human experience, meaning, justice, and culture. A year abroad is built into the programme, widening your intellectual and personal horizons through direct engagement with another academic and cultural environment. The College has an extensive network of partners in the public, private and voluntary sectors that support work-related learning and career development, and a dedicated Placement Office for Liberal Arts students manages those connections.

Liberal Arts graduates are highly adaptable and widely employed. The combination of analytical thinking, strong writing, and the ability to engage across disciplines is valued in the civil service, law, journalism, publishing, education, management consultancy, the charity sector, and the creative industries. Employers in many fields have come to recognise that breadth of intellectual formation and genuine curiosity are at least as valuable as narrow technical training.

Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in specific disciplines, finding that the liberal arts degree has given them the intellectual range to succeed in more specialised postgraduate work.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” …
