About this course

Linguistics and German is a combination that rewards students who want to understand language both as a formal system and as a living cultural phenomenon. Linguistics is the scientific study of language, examining how sounds, words, sentences and meanings are organised, how languages vary and change, and how they are acquired and processed by the human mind. German brings a particular linguistic and cultural depth to this study, with a rich tradition of philosophical and literary thought, a significant history of linguistic scholarship, and a contemporary relevance as the most widely spoken first language in the European Union.

At the University of Manchester, this four-year full-time programme includes both a sandwich year and a work placement, providing substantial professional experience alongside your academic studies. You will develop advanced proficiency in German, working on spoken and written language, translation and the analysis of literary and cultural texts, while also engaging with the core areas of linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics and language acquisition. The combination trains you to think analytically about the structure and use of language in a rigorous and systematic way, informed by both theoretical frameworks and detailed knowledge of a specific linguistic tradition.

Graduates from linguistics and language programmes move into careers in translation and interpreting, language teaching, natural language processing, publishing, journalism, international business, the civil service, diplomacy and communication-related roles across many sectors. The analytical training that linguistics provides is increasingly relevant in an era of rapid development in language technology, while German language skills open professional doors across Europe and beyond. Postgraduate study in linguistics, German studies, translation, applied linguistics or language technology is a natural progression for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
