Linguistics and Philosophy

Linguistics and Philosophy is a combination that investigates language and mind from complementary perspectives, asking both how language actually works and what it reveals about the nature of thought, knowledge, and reality. Linguistics is an empirical science that examines the structure of language at multiple levels, from the sounds of speech and the rules of grammar to the meaning carried by words and sentences, and the social and cognitive processes that underlie language use and change. Philosophy approaches some of the same questions but through conceptual analysis, asking what it means for words to have meaning, how language relates to thought, and what logic can tell us about valid argument and the limits of knowledge.

At the University of Leeds, this three-year, full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities. You will explore topics across the full breadth of linguistics, including language acquisition, syntax, phonetics, historical change, and language processing, using approaches drawn from both the arts and the sciences. The philosophy strand engages you with epistemology, logic, ethics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language, developing the precision and rigour that philosophical thinking demands.

The year abroad and sandwich year extend your experience into international and professional contexts, while placements give you the chance to apply your skills in settings that value analytical thinking and clear communication.

Graduates of Linguistics and Philosophy pursue careers in academia, education, language technology, speech and language therapy, publishing, journalism, the civil service, law, and communications. The combination of scientific understanding of language and philosophical rigour in argument is particularly valuable in artificial intelligence and natural language processing, as well as in any role that depends on close reading, clear reasoning, and precise expression. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science, or related fields.
