Literature and Theology

Literature and theology is a degree that brings two of the oldest and most humanistically rich of academic disciplines into sustained conversation. Literature examines how writers use language to represent human experience, create meaning, and engage readers in aesthetic, ethical, and imaginative encounters with the world. Theology examines the foundational beliefs, texts, practices, and traditions of religion, asking how human beings have understood the sacred and how religious thought and practice have shaped culture, ethics, and society.

The two disciplines have always been intertwined: some of the world's greatest literature is theological, and some of the most important theological writing is literary.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year programme is available in both full-time and part-time modes, making it accessible to students with work or family commitments alongside their studies. You will develop skills in literary analysis and theological interpretation, engaging with texts from across the Christian tradition and from other religious and literary traditions, and exploring how literature and theology illuminate each other across historical periods and cultural contexts.

Graduates of literature and theology programmes pursue careers in teaching, ministry, chaplaincy, publishing, journalism, broadcasting, arts administration, and academic research. The critical reading, ethical reasoning, and deep engagement with textual tradition that the degree develops are valued across a wide range of professional contexts, from education and the church to cultural institutions and creative industries. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, English literature, or philosophy of religion, building on the analytical and interpretive skills developed during the degree.
