Marine Biology

Marine biology is the scientific study of life in the ocean, one of the most complex and least understood ecosystems on earth. It encompasses the biology of organisms from microscopic plankton to whales, the ecology of habitats from coral reefs and deep-sea vents to coastal salt marshes, and the processes by which marine systems respond to human pressures including pollution, overfishing, and climate change. At a moment when ocean health has rarely been more urgently relevant, marine biology offers both intellectual richness and practical purpose.

At Southampton you will study all major forms of marine life, from the molecular and cellular level up through organisms, populations, and ecosystems. The programme covers marine ecology, oceanography, conservation biology, fisheries science, and the methods used to study the sea, including fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and quantitative modelling. Southampton's position on the Solent gives direct access to research vessels, and the four-year programme provides the extended time needed to move from foundational biology to advanced marine science.

You will work on the university's research vessels in Southampton waters and have the opportunity to study marine environments internationally.
