Marine Biology

Marine biology is the scientific study of life in the world's oceans, seas, and other saltwater environments. It encompasses the extraordinary diversity of marine organisms, from microscopic phytoplankton and bacteria through to fish, marine mammals, and the ecosystems they form, and examines how those organisms interact with one another and with their physical and chemical environment. Marine biologists study topics including coral reef ecology, the physiology of deep-sea creatures, the population dynamics of commercial fish stocks, and the effects of pollution and climate change on marine habitats.

The discipline sits at the intersection of ecology, physiology, chemistry, and oceanography, and it is increasingly urgent given the pressures on marine ecosystems globally.

At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year full-time BSc (Hons) provides you with knowledge and subject-specific skills relevant to working with marine organisms and marine habitats, the practical applications of marine biology, and its relationship to the broader biological sciences. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study marine biology in different environmental contexts and to engage with marine research and conservation in international settings. You will develop skills in field and laboratory techniques for studying marine organisms and environments, in data collection and analysis, and in the scientific reasoning needed to interpret biological evidence from the sea.

Marine biology graduates pursue careers in environmental consultancy, marine conservation, fisheries science, aquaculture, government agencies, research institutes, and international conservation organisations.
