About this course

Marine biology is the scientific study of life in the world's oceans, seas and coastal environments, encompassing organisms from microscopic plankton to the largest whales, and the ecosystems in which they exist. The discipline draws on ecology, physiology, biochemistry, genetics and oceanography to understand how marine life functions, how it is distributed across the oceans, and how it responds to environmental pressures. Climate change, pollution and unsustainable fishing are among the most pressing challenges facing marine ecosystems, and marine biologists are central to understanding and addressing them.

At the University of Salford, this three-year programme gives you a systematic understanding of key aspects of the marine environment, including its animal and plant communities, as well as a detailed insight into the industries and human systems that interact with it. You will develop field and laboratory skills alongside theoretical knowledge, learning to collect and analyse biological and environmental data in real marine contexts. A sandwich placement year is available, providing extended professional experience in a marine biology or environmental context, and the programme includes work placement opportunities throughout.

Graduates in marine biology pursue careers in environmental research, conservation organisations, government environmental agencies, fisheries management, aquaculture, offshore industry environmental assessment and marine consultancy. Many move into roles focused on marine conservation, monitoring and policy, working with organisations ranging from the Marine Conservation Society to government bodies and international environmental programmes. Academic research is a well-supported path, with PhD programmes in marine and aquatic biology, oceanography and environmental science available for those who want to pursue scientific research.

The skills developed in data collection, analysis and scientific communication are also transferable to wider environmental and scientific roles.
