Materials Science
Materials science is concerned with understanding the relationship between the structure of materials at the atomic and molecular level and their properties and performance in real applications. Everything in the physical world is made from materials, and the ability to design and improve those materials, making them stronger, lighter, more efficient, more durable or more sustainable, is central to progress in engineering, medicine, electronics, energy and manufacturing. From steel and concrete to semiconductors, polymers, ceramics, composites and biomaterials, the field spans an enormous range of substances and applications.
At Queen Mary University of London, this four-year full-time programme develops your expertise across the full breadth of materials science and engineering. You will study the structure and properties of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites, alongside materials characterisation techniques, processing methods, thermodynamics, mechanical behaviour, electronic and optical properties and sustainability in materials use. The programme connects fundamental science to engineering applications throughout, developing both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills.
